She works till 7:30 and I'm lured by this fair mermaid We sail down the Parkway and dock at Exit 98 We feel the sunset; a pink and orange glow We taste the saline from the ocean's flow We stroll down the boardwalk and old wood creaks beneath our feet Flashing lights surround us, Trade winds blow in from the east Shore air is heavy with humidity Arcades are beeping like a symphony The Ferris Wheel spins tonight The carousel rings like chimes Waves are crashing in lament As Summer Ends We take our shoes and socks off our bare feet tread across the beach The ground's a sandy mattress The sky's a starry canopy Salt water's freezing but her arms are warm The night wind is singing like a troubadour The Ferris Wheel spins tonight The carousel rings like chimes Waves are crashing in lament As Summer Ends

It was three years ago today I spent the summer drifting up and down the coast It was just a temporary stay I needed time to run away from Torie's ghost There's a seaside town where she can be found I wish I was there today I want to go where summer lasts forever I want to go where everything is clear I want to go where summer lasts forever I want to go to San Luis Obispo Kate worked on Higuera street Waiting tables and sending pay home to her mom She asked me what I'd like to eat Then smiled and I asked if I'd be there for very long Her green eyes glowed and her red hair flowed I wish I was there today Chorus California seems so far away and Katie moved back home to Santa Fe and I'm happy in New Jersey anyway Chorus

The crucifix is dangling from her gold chain Its June 26th, her birthday. She's on her way. She served her time at St. Marys with Sister Bernadette She's had her fill of New Jersey and the Old Testament Now San Francisco calls her name. Get out of her way its Kathy's Kalifornia now. Its Kathy's Kalifornia now. Get out of her way its Kathy's Kalifornia now. Its Kathy's Kalifornia now. She cables down the hill sets up her easel and starts to paint a landscape of St. Paul and Peter and the Golden Gate. No gallery will show her work Chorus I heard she's waiting tables at some bar on Market Street and memories of New Jersey suddenly seem bittersweet. She believes that she can make it if she sticks it out. But its been a year of loneliness, frustration, and doubt. Chorus

She calls me on the phone, she says she's all alone and come see me tonight I take 287, stop at 7-11 to fuel my evening flight Now there's crumbs in the crevice of my corduroys Coffee stains my stick shift It's a sweltering drive, I'm preoccupied tonight And all the time I think of her and I hope that the summer never ends I'm headed down to Crescent Street our designated place to meet I'm headed down to Crescent Street tonight I'm headed down to Crescent Street We're melting in the August heat I'm headed down to Crescent Street tonight My wheel hits the curb and I observe her waiting at the door Her tight half shirt and her hippie skirt are difficult to ignore She leads me up the staircase, her long hair in my face I smell summer breeze Her lower back skin makes my dirty mouth grin and weakens my knees We talk about the day's events but we don't even make it up the stairs I'm headed down to Crescent Street our designated place to meet I'm headed to Crescent Street tonight I'm headed down to Crescent Street We're melting in the August heat I'm headed down to Crescent Street tonight We're locked inside and our bodies collide to the sound of passing cars The Elysian fields of her body heals my old romantic scars Then we had out on the roof for an interlude to watch the midnight sky We have a deep conversation and a sweet libation like some religious right We fall asleep up on the roof and I hope that the summer never ends I'm headed down to Crescent Street our designated place to meet I'm headed to Crescent Street tonight I'm headed down to Crescent Street We're melting in the August heat I'm headed down to Crescent Street tonight
